Setting up email with Microsoft Outlook Express

Microsoft Outlook Express comes standard with most Microsoft Windows operating systems. If you have it, it can be accessed on the Start Menu.

Create a New Account

If you have never created a new account in Outlook Express, the Internet Connection Wizard will open automatically when you open Outlook Express. If it does, move on to the section entitled The Internet Connection Wizard below. If it does not, select Tools > Accounts from the menubar at the top of the screen.

If you have created an account for your email address at dchweb.com and it does not work, delete it now by selecting it from the listbox (it will be named something to the effect of mail.dchweb.com) and pressing the Remove button from the right of the dialog.

Press Add... > Mail... at the right of the dialog that appears.


The Internet Connection Wizard

Enter your name in the Display name: field in the dialog that appears and press next.


Enter your email address in the E-mail address: field and press next.


Set My incoming mail server is a to POP3 if it isn't already. Enter mail.dchweb.com in both the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server: and the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:. Press next


In the next step of the wizard, enter your full email address in the Account name: field. Enter your password in the Password field. Tick the Remember password checkbox if you wish. Press next. Press finish.


Enabling SSL

Select Tools > Accounts from the menubar at the top of the screen.


Click the Mail tab from the tabset in the dialog that appears. Select mail.dchweb.com and press the Properties button from the right of the dialog.


A dialog will appear. Select the Advanced tab from the tabset at the top of this new dialog. Tick the checkbox labled This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Outgoing mail (SMTP):. Make sure the Outgoing mail (SMTP): field contains 465. If it does not, replace the existing value. Tick the checkbox labled This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Incoming mail (POP3). Make sure the Incoming mail (POP3): field contains 995. If it does not, replace the existing value.


Press OK. Press Close.

Press the Send and Receive All button on the toolbar. Enter your password to retrieve your mail. You should receive a message from the dchweb.com Postmaster congratulating you on setting up your email client if this is the first time you have ever set up an email client.
